A roadside plan buys access to help under stated limits, rather than unlimited towing or free repairs. The right comparison starts with the journeys the driver takes, the tow destination and coverage already attached to the car or another account. The annual price matters, but a short towing allowance can leave a much larger bill after a distant breakdown.
The October 2026 prices below come from AAA Mountain West Group’s own menu and terms. Other AAA clubs can charge different amounts. Calculations show the difference between plans and household arrangements without assigning an invented probability of breakdown or declaring the membership a guaranteed money-saving purchase.
Key figures
- $64.99 AAA Mountain West Group Classic, yearly primary membership
- $99.99 AAA Mountain West Group Plus, yearly primary membership
- $124.99 AAA Mountain West Group Premier, yearly primary membership
Three published annual prices buy different towing limits
The club’s prices are annual membership charges, even when a comparison divides them into monthly amounts. Ask for the current offer and renewal price before buying, especially if a promotion or automatic-renewal discount appears. A first-year promotion should not silently become the assumed permanent price.
| AAA Mountain West Group plan | Annual primary price | Listed tow allowance | Additional household member |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | $64.99 | 5 miles or nearest approved repair facility | $44.99/year |
| Plus | $99.99 | 100 miles per tow | $64.99/year |
| Premier | $124.99 | One 200-mile tow; remaining tows 100 miles | $84.99/year |

Dividing the primary fees by twelve gives about $5.42, $8.33 and $10.42 per month. Those are budget equivalents, not monthly payment offers. Plus costs $35 more per year than Classic, while Premier costs $25 more than Plus. The extra amount should be compared with the benefit the driver might use, not the number of perks in an advertisement.
A longer tow can matter more than a lower annual price
Consider a hypothetical 60-mile tow to the driver’s chosen workshop. If Classic’s five-mile allowance governs that destination, 55 miles remain outside it. At an assumed $5 per additional mile, that would be $275 extra. This is illustrative arithmetic, not the club’s excess-mile rate; obtain the actual charge and confirm whether the nearest-approved-facility option changes the destination.
Plus’s advertised 100-mile allowance would encompass that distance for an eligible tow. Paying its extra $35 annual fee could therefore buy a materially different service, but it does not prove the driver will experience that breakdown or save $275. Coverage conditions and the tow requested determine the result.
Premier’s one 200-mile tow also is not four 200-mile tows. A driver planning long journeys should compare the first extended tow with the allowance remaining afterward. Ask how the annual request count works if the provider first attempts a jump or spare installation and then needs to tow.
The maintenance budget guide separates the membership from scheduled maintenance. Paying for assistance does not replace upkeep, and its annual fee should not be presented as paying the repair shop’s eventual bill.
Household coverage follows people under the membership terms
For two eligible household members, the listed annual totals are $109.98 for Classic, $164.98 for Plus and $209.98 for Premier. These sums combine the primary and additional-member prices without applying promotional discounts. Confirm household eligibility and each person’s roadside allowance in the club’s terms.
Membership coverage that follows the member differs from vehicle-specific manufacturer assistance. A household with multiple cars should compare who is covered while traveling in each car and whether the member must be present. Buying a membership for one person does not mean every household driver can request its help independently.
Before paying for an additional person, check coverage through another membership, insurance policy or manufacturer program. Record the person or vehicle covered, the service count, towing destination and exclusions. An apparently duplicated service may still have a different limit, so compare the contract rather than assuming one can be canceled solely because both say “roadside.”
The car-battery quote guide separates a jump or battery test from purchasing a replacement battery. A roadside dispatch does not establish that the cost of a new battery is included in membership.
Waiting periods prevent buying every benefit after a breakdown
The club’s terms say new roadside benefits take effect after 48 hours. Its roadside page offers immediate help by phone for the Classic membership cost plus a $75 fee. Using the listed $64.99 primary price, that combination is $139.99 before any uncovered work. It is not an immediate purchase of unlimited long-distance towing.
The terms also specify ten days before upgraded benefits can be used. A member cannot assume a same-day upgrade will supply the longer tow needed during an existing breakdown. Ask the dispatcher which level governs the request and what excess distance would cost before choosing a destination.
Store the provider’s request method and membership details where they can be reached when the car is disabled. If the only copy is in a locked vehicle or an unavailable phone account, asking for assistance can become harder. This preparation matters independently of whether the annual plan eventually saves money.
Manufacturer assistance can have different covered causes
Tesla’s support page, for example, describes transport up to 500 miles to its nearest service center for a warrantable breakdown that makes the vehicle undrivable. Its flat-tire service description has a different 50-mile limit and conditions, while a depleted battery is not a financially covered service. These are manufacturer-specific boundaries, not a free-recovery rule for every EV situation.
That illustrates why one impressive towing distance should not decide the comparison. Check the cause, destination and vehicle eligibility as well as the mileage. A membership permitting a chosen mechanic and a manufacturer program directing the car to its service center can produce different outcomes for the same journey.
If stranded in an unsafe location, contact emergency services and follow the vehicle’s safety instructions. Arrange help without attempting repairs beside moving traffic; a membership app is not an emergency response service.
The tire-puncture guide explains the repair decision after recovery. A tow benefit and a free in-store repair are separate services, so keep transport, diagnosis, parts and any uncovered charges distinct when totaling the event.
Questions people ask
Does AAA cost $64.99 everywhere?
No. That is the published Classic annual primary price for AAA Mountain West Group. Other clubs, promotions and renewal terms can differ.
Is Premier unlimited 200-mile towing?
The cited club lists one 200-mile tow and 100-mile remaining tows, within its annual request limit. Read the terms for eligibility and additional charges.
Can a new member get help immediately?
The club offers immediate phone assistance at Classic level with a $75 fee in addition to membership. New benefits otherwise have a 48-hour wait; upgraded benefits have a ten-day wait.
Does manufacturer roadside help make membership redundant?
Compare covered causes, people or vehicles, distance, destination and exclusions. Tesla's differing breakdown, flat-tire and depleted-battery rules illustrate why the headline distance alone is insufficient.
