How to Sell a Car With a Loan Still Owed

Calculate sale proceeds after a dated loan payoff, understand title-release delays, and plan for a shortfall before promising a buyer clear ownership.

Selling a financed car is possible, but the lender’s lien changes the handover. The sale price belongs on one line, the amount required to close the loan on another, and the cash left for the seller on a third. A buyer handing over enough money does not itself remove the lien or produce a transferable title.

Before listing the car as ready for immediate transfer, obtain the lender’s payoff instructions and ask the state motor vehicle office how that title will move. The arithmetic below is a labeled example. It helps reconcile the transaction; it cannot establish a lender’s settlement amount, authorize a title transfer or decide a disputed ownership claim.

Key figures

  • $15,049.32 Example: payoff after ten days' interest
  • $2,950.68 Example: money left from an $18,000 sale
  • $1,049.32 Example: extra cash for a $14,000 sale

A dated payoff replaces the statement balance

The CFPB explains that a payoff can differ from the outstanding balance shown on a statement because of interest, late fees or other charges. Ask for an amount good through a named date, the accepted payment method, where the payment goes and how the lender identifies the account. A screenshot of last month’s balance is not enough for a sale closing next week.

For an illustration, assume $15,000 outstanding principal, a fixed 12% rate, daily simple interest calculated on a 365-day year and no fees. The calculation is $15,000 × 0.12 ÷ 365 = $4.9315 a day. Over ten days, the unrounded figure gives $49.32. The resulting $15,049.32 is an example, not a payoff quote; contracts can use another method and interest already accrued may also be due.

If the payment arrives after the quote expires, request an updated figure rather than guessing the difference. Confirm receipt and closure with the lender. The early payoff guide covers contract penalties and interest questions that should be settled before a sale.

Positive equity and a shortfall produce opposite cash flows

Use the same dated payoff for each offer made on the same closing assumptions. A higher advertised private-sale price may still come with preparation, advertising or transport costs. A dealer offer may be lower but easier to coordinate with the lienholder. Neither route changes the existing debt simply because the seller prefers its offer.

Hypothetical closingSale priceDated payoffSelling costs assumedSeller cash or contribution

Sale below payoff$14,000$15,049.32$0$1,049.32 contributed
Lower sale with preparation$14,000$15,049.32$250$1,299.32 contributed

Source note: illustrative prices and costs, with payoff arithmetic under the assumptions above. CFPB guidance supports separating payoff from statement balance and sale value; these figures are not market valuations or lender quotes.

The contribution in the lower-price examples must be funded as part of an agreed settlement. Sending only $14,000 against a $15,049.32 obligation does not make the remaining balance vanish. If the seller cannot close that gap, the promised lien release may not occur. Reprice or postpone the transaction until the lender confirms a workable process.

A dealer’s payoff promise belongs in the sale accounting

The CFPB warns that negative equity can be rolled into a replacement loan, increasing the amount borrowed and interest paid. A dealer saying it will “pay off your car” does not prove the shortfall was absorbed by the dealer. Find it in the replacement purchase price, cash down payment, trade allowance and amount financed.

In a hypothetical replacement purchase, adding the $1,049.32 shortfall to a $20,000 amount otherwise financed makes it $21,049.32 before other changes. That is debt transferred into a new agreement, not $1,049.32 of debt forgiven. This comparison does not assume a lender will approve the loan or that transferring the debt is the best choice.

The trade-in versus private-sale worksheet also includes state tax treatment. Keep that possible tax effect separate from loan equity: tax savings on a replacement car do not equal cash used to discharge the old lien.

Lien release and title delivery take separate time

Navy Federal’s auto-loan FAQ says that in most situations it releases a title within ten business days of receiving payoff, and delivery of the title or lien release can take another seven to ten business days. Electronic titles and other conditions can change the process. Those periods are an example from that credit union, not a deadline every bank or DMV must meet.

Ask where the document will go, who receives it and whether the buyer can register the vehicle before it arrives. A bill of sale and lender payment receipt may document parts of the transaction without replacing the title documents required by the state. Do not promise same-day registration based only on the fact that the loan payment cleared.

For a private sale, agree the payment destinations and possession arrangements before taking money. Verify instructions through contact details obtained independently from the lender. The lender and state office can explain their process; legal assistance is the place to resolve a disputed lien or contract interpretation.

A closed account is the final check after the sale

The CFPB recommends waiting one week after a dealer trade-in transaction and contacting the old lender to confirm the loan has been paid. Identify the department that can verify this before leaving the dealership. Retain the sale agreement, payoff quote, payment reference and confirmation of a zero balance.

A sale agreement does not close the loan

Follow the lender’s payment instructions and confirm settlement. Until the account is closed or the lender tells you otherwise, a dealer’s promise does not replace the borrower’s payment obligations.

If an optional service contract is canceled during the sale, track that refund separately. The dealer add-on refund guide explains why a refund may reach the loan after the vehicle transaction. Do not count an unprocessed refund as cash already available to cover a shortfall.

Questions people ask

Can I sell a car before the loan is paid off?

Yes, if the transaction follows the lender's lien-release and the state's title process. Arrange payoff and document delivery before promising clear ownership to a buyer.

Is my online balance the sale payoff?

Not necessarily. The CFPB notes that interest and charges can make payoff differ. Obtain a dated quote and update it if the closing date changes.

What happens when the sale price is less than the debt?

The difference still has to be resolved. In the hypothetical $14,000 sale and $15,049.32 payoff, the gap is $1,049.32 before selling costs. A new loan does not forgive it.

Will the title arrive immediately after payment?

Do not assume so. Navy Federal describes release within 10 business days in most cases and another 7–10 business days for delivery, with electronic-title exceptions. Ask your own lender.
