Lease Buyout Cost: Residual, Taxes, Fees and Interest

Calculate a lease buyout beyond its residual value, with Texas's published tax rule, a labeled fee worksheet and the interest from financing the purchase.

A lease buyout cost starts with the vehicle purchase option and then adds the charges required to take ownership. The residual value on the original lease helps calculate the lease payments, but it is not automatically the full amount due to buy the car on any date. Tax, purchase-option fees, outstanding amounts and funding costs can change the decision.

Compare buying the leased car with returning it and purchasing a matched alternative from the same date. This guide uses Texas’s published tax treatment as a state example, plus a labeled worksheet and one lender’s minimum used-auto APR. It does not determine an individual tax liability or imply that every lease permits every purchase route.

Key figures

  • $18,000 Example: lease purchase-option price
  • 6.25% Texas motor vehicle sales tax
  • $19,525 Example: buyout before repairs and financing

The purchase option establishes the starting price

The CFPB explains that a lessee can buy at the end if the lease includes a purchase option. Regulation M calls for disclosure of whether an option exists and its price or price-setting method. Read that section rather than substituting an estimated market value from a listing site.

Request a dated quote directly from the lessor for the purchase route being considered. An early buyout, scheduled-end purchase and dealer acquisition may have different amounts or eligibility. Record the VIN, quote expiration, outstanding amounts and recipient of the payment before applying for funding.

The car transaction budget keeps vehicle price, charges and financing distinct. Do not add a residual value to a quote that already includes the purchase option; that would count the car twice. Conversely, a figure labeled residual on the lease should not be assumed to include tax or title processing.

Texas treats an operating-lease purchase as a second sale

Texas Comptroller guidance says the lessee’s purchase from an operating lessor is a new taxable sale, based on the amount paid at the conclusion of the lease, with standard presumptive value procedures potentially relevant. The state publishes a 6.25% motor vehicle sales and use-tax rate. It says the lessee cannot claim credit for tax paid in the lessor’s name on the lessor’s Texas purchase.

The guidance separately describes conditional-sale arrangements and certain taxes paid by the lessee. Those distinctions are why a blanket claim of either no tax or automatic double taxation can misstate a case. Confirm the classification and taxable base with the title or tax authority before treating an online calculator as the final bill.

For arithmetic only, applying 6.25% to a hypothetical $18,000 taxable purchase amount produces $1,125. This does not establish whether every additional fee is taxable, whether a valuation rule changes the base or whether another jurisdiction allows a credit. A buyer outside Texas should use that jurisdiction’s rule instead.

A worksheet reveals what the residual leaves out

The example below assumes a scheduled-end $18,000 purchase option, the illustrative $1,125 tax just calculated, a hypothetical $300 purchase-option charge and a hypothetical $100 registration allocation. The last two amounts are placeholders to replace with the lessor’s and authority’s figures, not published national fees.

Hypothetical cash-to-own worksheetAmount
Vehicle purchase option$18,000
Illustrative tax on $18,000 at 6.25%$1,125
Assumed purchase-option charge$300
Assumed registration allocation$100
Subtotal before work and financing$19,525

Source note: Texas Comptroller for the stated rate and operating-lease treatment; worksheet amounts and fee placeholders are assumptions. Actual taxable value, other charges, credits and eligibility require confirmation. This is not a personalized tax quote.

The subtotal exceeds the purchase option by $1,525, about 8.5%. If the only figure compared with a replacement car is $18,000, the analysis leaves that difference out. A $19,000 alternative would not automatically be cheaper or more expensive either: obtain its own out-the-door figure before comparing it with the buyout subtotal.

Record return-only charges on the alternative route. Excess mileage, damage or a disposition fee may depend on whether the vehicle is returned or bought and on the lease terms. Do not assume buying waives all charges, or add return costs to a purchase route without confirming that they remain due.

Financing adds a second price to owning the same car

Navy Federal’s October 8, 2026 used-auto schedule advertises a minimum 5.29% APR for 37–60 months, subject to membership, underwriting and vehicle conditions. Using it for a hypothetical $19,525 loan over 60 months gives a payment of about $371.06, total scheduled repayments of $22,263.64 and interest of $2,738.64.

The calculation assumes fixed-rate equal monthly installments with no added finance fees, using APR divided by 12 as the monthly rate. Totals use the unrounded payment; a lender’s cents rounding and final installment can differ. An approved rate, down payment or financed amount can change all three figures.

The cash versus financing guide compares repayment periods. If taxes or fees are paid upfront, remove them from the loan principal but leave them in the total purchase cost. Paying $1,525 upfront and financing only $18,000 does not erase that upfront spending.

Familiar maintenance history improves the comparison

Buying the car already driven provides a known service history, but it does not mean maintenance is free. List tires, brakes, scheduled services and known faults due after purchase. Obtain prices for those jobs before assigning the entire difference between a buyout and another car to savings.

The maintenance budget guide separates scheduled work from observed repairs. A replacement vehicle might also need inspection or immediate service, so enter its costs on the other side. Use similar holding periods and driving assumptions when estimating ownership expenses.

Warranty coverage may have remaining time or mileage, but the lease’s ending does not itself renew factory coverage. Check the vehicle’s warranty start and current odometer. Treat a separate service contract as another optional purchase rather than calling it part of the residual unless it appears in the confirmed quote.

Payment, title and timing complete the purchase route

Confirm whether the lessor handles the transaction directly or requires a permitted intermediary, and which party provides title paperwork. A loan approval does not establish that the lessor will accept that lender’s payment or the proposed buyer. Keep quote expiration and funding timing aligned.

Continue required lease payments until the lessor confirms the account status and purchase process. A request for a quote is not a completed sale or permission to stop paying. Keep the final settlement statement so amounts paid during processing can be reconciled with the purchase.

Compare from today, without counting sunk lease payments again

Past lease payments describe money already spent. For the decision now, compare the remaining cash and obligations for buying with those for returning and replacing. Adding all past payments only to the buyout route distorts that forward comparison.

For a disputed purchase charge, tax interpretation or title restriction, use the responsible lessor, authority or adviser with the lease and dated quote. The worksheet is valuable because each charge has an identified purpose and source; it should not conceal unresolved terms behind one apparently precise total.

If the replacement candidate comes from a rental fleet, the former rental purchase comparison prices checking and explains its warranty and buyback limits rather than assuming a fixed fleet discount.

Questions people ask

Is the residual the full lease buyout cost?

Not automatically. Obtain the purchase option and dated quote, then identify tax, fees and outstanding amounts. An early quote can differ from the scheduled-end amount.

Did tax paid during a Texas lease already cover the buyout?

Texas treats an operating-lease purchase as a new sale and does not automatically credit the lessee for the lessor's tax. Contract classification and lessee-paid taxes require separate checking.

Is $300 a standard buyout fee?

No. It is a hypothetical worksheet placeholder. Replace it with the charge in the lease or confirmed quote.

Does the $371.06 payment apply to every buyer?

No. It is calculated for $19,525 over 60 months at the named lender's advertised minimum 5.29% rate, with no added loan fees. An offer can differ.
